memo
There has been a massive flux of synthy and psychedelic lo-fi pop this year. And just when you think you’ve heard enough reverb-drenched female vocals floating like distant echoes over woozy textures and wispy rhythms for a while, Peaking Light's hauntingly melodic (and first proper album) ”936“ on Not Not Fun leaves you begging for more. The thing that sets ”936“ apart from their peers is the immersive krauty dub-influence, which is at the center of all eight tracks. The album sounds like a rough-and-ready psyched-out version of St.Etienne. Listen to the skanking ”All The Sun That Shines“ and you'll know what I mean. ”Hey Sparrow“ is another heartbreaker of a song, but the whole album is heavily addictive, drifting and floating through lo-fi pop’s ethereal twilight-zone. All killer, no filler! A big recommendation.
