Thanks to Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings a massive haematoma covers my forehead at the moment. After a friend of mine introduced me to her music a couple of weeks ago, I kept banging my head against the wall, asking myself the same questions over and over again: where the hell had I been the last decade? How could I have missed this? But, enough about me and my little aches and pains.
"Soul Time!" is Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings' fifth album to date, a compilation of the band's live show gems of the last years. Starting off with "Genuine Pt.1 and Pt.2", one immediately knows where this is heading to: soul and funk not even James Brown could have done better. Using traditional analogue recording equipment, the Dap Kings perfectly capture the 60s soul sound and cope with Sharon Jones' extraordinary and peerless voice.
Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings point out the difference between reviving and reinventing. To call their music retro would be an insult, because this is some timeless hot shit. Or, as James Brown would put it: "I feel good, I knew that I would."
