“Ghosts” is the third album by German soft proggers Frequency Drift. Folk meets ambient rock and prog, and the melancholic atmosphere throughout is appropriate as the album thematically approaches haunting and inexplicable things. The singing of lead vocalist, Antje Auer, can be a little annoying sometimes, especially since her voice is extremely prominent in the mix, but the instrumental passages, e.g. in the long track “Dreams,” are absolutely convincing. They skillfully fuse folk melodies with metal hardness, and the flute and violin are a nice touch. “Dance No More” is a hypnotic piece that beautifully showcases Auer’s etheral voice and the band’s prowess as they change back and forth between quiet ambient passages and rockier sections. “Tempest” has a really catchy refrain. If you are into Sonata Arctica, there is no reason why you wouldn’t like Frequency Drift, although they are not as heavy as the former.
