Tenhi’s sixth album, “Saivo,” took a long time to finish, but it was well worth the time taken. This is a masterpiece of atmospheric ambient doom and melancholic neofolk with strong medieval overtones on pieces such as “Uloin.” The main instruments are the arpeggiated acoustic guitar and drums, combined with a deep, murmuring voice, more narrator than singer. In addition, Tenhi employ a string section on several pieces. “Haaksi” is one example of the lovingly arranged music, with an eye for details. The wonderful “Siniset Runot” is another. Thus, the time taken to develop and record the music – each single note bearing weight on this album –should be reflected in the time dedicated to listening to and experiencing this sublime aural journey. Saivo is a region of the dead in Sámi mythology, and Tenhi capably take the listener into this world beyond our earthly existence.
