The Flaming LipsThe Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends

Oklahoma’s The Flaming Lips release a collaboration album with various mainstream and off-center artists. The songs on “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends” range from pastoral to trippy and experimental music.

Originally released as a vinyl-only, limited-edition album on Record Store Day, The Flaming Lips’ latest collaboration, the album “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,” is now available for a larger audience. And, while their weirdly psychedelic mixture of indie rock, pop and experimental music is unfortunately still not to everybody’s taste, their fans and other open-minded music afficionados may rejoice at yet another trippy release. The musical collaborators on “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends” include, among others, Kesha, Nick Cave and Tame Impala. The songs range from the pastoral, Pink Floydian of “Helping the Retarded to Find God” to the overdriven electronica of opener “2012 (You Must Be Upgraded)” and the wonderful chaotic terror of “Supermoon Made Me Want to Pee” (with Prefuse 73; check out the awesome video clip). Some tracks, like “You, Man? Human???” (featuring Nick Cave), seem to be completely improvised. Others seem like weird remixes (“Is David Bowie Dying?”). The glue that holds all these disparate artists together are clearly The Flaming Lips, creating a coherent album of psyched-out head trip music.
