“Dimension Hatröss” is Voivod’s fourth album. The 2012 reissue of their album marks the band’s 30th anniversary. It is a science fiction concept album about the band’s fictional Korgüll character entering an eponymous dimension through an experiment with a particle accelerator. But the story is accessory, the music is what really counts. And that is astonishing after the exciting, yet still very raw predecessor, “Killing Technology.” Voivod returned in 1988 with a much more refined sound and eight songs that really display their prowess as songwriters and performers. Combining elements of heavy metal, hardcore and progressive rock, as well as guitarist Denis d’Amour’s unique sound and playing style, Voivod have always been an individual band with a very distinct sound and style.
My favorite after all these years remains the opening section of “Experiment,” the album’s opening track. It has a fantastic riff that demonstrates that metal can groove as well. “Tribal Convictions” starts out with another killer riff, accompanied by Langevin’s enthralling tribal drum patterns. This may well be the standout track on “Dimension Hatröss” with its dark, brooding groove and off-kilter refrain. The numerous, different parts culminate in the final lines of “Who’s god ... who’s dog?” “Chaosmöngers” will probably not lose its topicality, as it deals with terrorists setting off bombs which kill innocent bystanders. “Technocratic Manipulators” is a great uptempo number, while Belanger’s vocals on the first verses of “Brain Scan” have lost nothing of their bone-chilling quality after all these years. All the tracks on the album are amazing, and while its follow-up, “Nothingface” (1989), was the band’s most successful album to date, “Dimension Hatröss” remains the unquestioned classic for me. Voivod could have left the tongue-in-cheek verion of the “Batman” theme off the reissue. Agreed, it’s a good theme song, but as a bonus song it adds nothing to the album and old jokes rarely work twice. A new album is announced for 2012.
