AnywhereAnywhere

Anywhere features an all-star line up of sorts – the self-titled debut album is a mesmerizing collection of psychedelic gems and reflective meditations.

Anywhere’s self-titled debut album contains the four tracks from the two singles released late last year and earlier this year, respectively, plus three additional songs. Anywhere features Christian Eric Beaulieu (Triclops!), Cedric Bixler Zavala (The Mars Volta) and Mike Watt (The Minutemen, fIREHOSE) as well as Rachel Fannan (ex-Sleepy Sun) and producer Toshi Kasai (now also the guitar player in Big Business). Opening with the frantic instrumental “Pyramid Mirrors,” Anywhere is not like any of its members’ former or main bands. Beaulieu only plays acoustic guitar – in stark contrast to his heavy electric riffing in his former band, Triclops! Bixler Zavala plays drums and percussion, always rather hectically, and only contributes vocals to the title track. While “Infrared Moses” and “Pyramid Mirrors” are instrumentals, Fannan’s enchanting vocals grace songs like “Dead Golden West” and “Rosa Rugosa.” So, what about this album? Should I compare it to a summer’s day? A summer’s day shines in quite dull colors, compared to this psychedelic musical meditation. Whether it’s entrancing, reflective tracks like “Shaman Mantra” or a head-on psychedelic assault like “Khamsin” or the second half of “Rosa Rugosa,” “Anywhere” is a brilliant, colorful album, hypnotic and rousing, that will blast you away.
